Black Panther and Geography "IndyWatch Feed Comics"

Theres so much to unpack in Black Panther.

A lot has to do with the African diaspora, which my opinion on is worthless. I just wanna talk about one thing.

Black Panther is amazing cause it shows the importance of physical geography to whether people are free or oppressed. The reason white Europeans could conquer the rest of the world wasnt because white people are smarter. Its because they had better geographic luck. This is something Jared Diamond talks about. European plants, animals and soil made farming easy. Once they got farming sorted and food wasnt a shit-fight they could focus on upping their tech (and again had the geographic luck of access to metals to do it). They made boats and weapons to expand elsewhere.

Other nations didnt have this geographic luck. They couldnt make (or spend the time making) weapons to compete with those white Europeans would use against them. And its not like there was internet back then to keep you informed on what people overseas had planned for you so you could prep.

In Black Panther, the reason Wakandans have a sweet life is also because of geographical luck. A metal fell from the sky and they used it resourcefully, as did Europeans. The only difference was philosophy: Wakandans didnt use their geographic luck to screw others. Europeans did.

And this highlights something huge about colonialism. Europeans didnt conquer the world cause it was their destiny, cause they had superior ideas, cause theyre just smarter than black and brown people. They conquered it because of two things. One, the physical conditions of their part of the world gave them a boost. Two, they didnt have the kindness or integrity to not use that boost to screw others.

This is so important. This is why we need to fight climate change. Our freedom and quality of life is tethered to the physical world. It has been from the beginning. This is also important because it makes clear what a lie it is of white supremacy. White people had better soil. Not better minds or hearts.

NOTE: I just reduced centuries of history to a few paragraphs. So I know this is reductive and nowhere near the whole story. And there are way more valuable takes on Black Panther than mine :) If I got anything wrong though, lemme know.

Driven "IndyWatch Feed Comics"

(Get into the whole embiggenation thing by clicking on the headlight of the red car.)

Bizarro is brought to you today by Actual Fortune Tellers.

Ive taken Uber or Lyft a few dozen times and with one exception, have always had a positive experience. The exception was in LA and the guy driving our car seemed friendly enough to Olive Oyl and me but was prone to honking at other drivers, cussing them out under his breath, and weaving through traffic to cut people off that he thought had offended him. His driving was such a stereotypical example of road rage that it seemed like a scene from a sit-com, but scary. (I once watched 8 minutes of an episode of Two and a Half Men and found it equally scary, but in a different way. Getting Charlie Sheen as your Uber driver would perhaps be a perfect storm. )

When it was over, we were expected to rate the driver on our smartphone but hesitated to be truthful because we didnt know if he would know we had given him a low rating and we knew that he was required to rate us as passengers, too. If we trashed him and he knew it, he could trash us. Which could make the next driver refuse to give us a ride.

This is one of the many dark sides of the Internet conveniences we have come to depend on. Not unlike Menkens uncanny prediction of where Americas democracy would lead (click the blue link above or these blue words here for the quote Im talking about) many have predicted that Internet technology will be our demise. I agree with that view in a variety of ways, from fake news swaying elections to the personal despair one feels from living most of ones life inside a tiny, electronic screen. For myriad frightening ways in which technology could end up destroying ussome of which are already happeningwatch a few episodes of the often brilliant TV series, Black Mirror on Netflix.
